Jane Allan reviews a talk by Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff on Saturday 11th November 2023, organised by the Friends of PSAD.

Review by Jane Allan.

After the AGM, Mariska Beekenkamp Wladimiroff delivered a fascinating lecture about Frans Hals, the 17th Century Dutch portrait artist. Although very little is known about his life, Mariska described in such detail the times he lived in I felt we had a much greater understanding of the man. His skill in painting children, smiling faces and hands, all notoriously difficult to do was discussed. In contrasting the three great Dutch artists Rembrandt and Vermeer and Hals, Mariska showed how different they were in their style of painting. The detail that Hals achieved in painting the textures of the mainly black fabrics worn by his subjects was extraordinary. A lot of the audience felt inspired to visit the current exhibition of Frans Hals at the National Gallery after this knowledgeable and entertaining talk.

Mariska is giving a series of lectures in Richmond and has kindly offered to give a discount to any students who wish to attend, just mention PSAD. Details are available at her website www.arthistoricallondon.com/calendar
