Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious

I have just returned from seeing this at Dulwich picture gallery and I am full of enthusiasm for the exhibits. The wife of Eric Ravilious, Tirzah had an observant eye and would often include little narratives of life around her. Her finely worked woodcuts of everyday events and characters are so human, and slightly naive. I loved this one in the Hall of Mirrors. The painting of The Old Soldier also shown here, depicts a toy guardsman , apparently flattened by toy steamroller, driven by a modern day soldier with a machine gun. Her collage boxes are also snippets of life. The Bakers Shop, the Ice cream Seller , all constructed out of painted cardboard and paper, so delightful. There are quite a few of Eric’s painting on show too, and some fabulous marbled papers she designed for books and use in interior decoration. A really charming and unusual exhibition.
