The Shape of Things: Still Life at Pallant House Gallery
It is always a treat to visit this gallery in Chichester. Their permanent collection has some gems of the 20th Century including Peter Blake , Ron Kitaj, Frank Auerbach, Barbara Hepworth and many others. All housed within an 18 th Century Grade 1 listed building and a new purpose built contemporary wing.
The current exhibition draws together a huge variety of Still Life studies and looks at the significance of the genre as a commentary on life and society. With examples of 17th Century ‘vanitas Paintings’ displayed alongside post impressionist, abstract and conceptual art, the relevance to today’s consumerism becomes obvious.
Some highlights for me were a couple of Winifred Nicholsons, Vanessa Bell, and an unusual (to me) Ivon Hitchens. There is a very interesting contemporary piece by Cornelia Parker and an Edmund De Waal for any potters! (Annoyingly I didn’t take photos of these last two).
