Michael Craig-Martin
A retrospective of work by Royal Academician Michael Craig-Martin whose work spans from the conceptual beginnings to the bold colourful paintings that depict everyday objects and reflect the changes and the developments.
RA says ‘This is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Craig-Martin’s work ever held in the UK. ‘
I thoroughly recommend a visit because it is a comprehensive show including Craig-Martin’s early work, which I find very intriguing. Just as many other people my knowledge of his work was rather limited to his later phases, the bold and colourful images of various objects, which, whilst attractive looking, feel quite extensively repetitive. What I found fascinating is a collection of ideas, often philosophical, and works that clearly have influenced various artists since. Apart from his early geometrical drawings and installations my favourite (colourful) artwork is this playful take on Galaxy (see photo album). The video room contains an encaptivating and at times overwhelming digital moving reel!
