Clare Frankl Bertram reviews Friends’ latest workshop, pottery masterclass by Korean potter Miae Kim, held on 9 March 2025 at PSAD 3D Campus in Disraeli Road.

Our workshop with Miae was a masterclass in elegance, precision and dexterity. Her demonstration of how to make one of her, slab built, bottle forms had us all captivated. Every measurement, cut and hand movement had been considered and simplified for maximum effect. We stumbled to follow her example but had our own pieces ready for initial decoration by lunch time. Many thanks to Leigh for preparing slabs for us all in advance. We were a big group so Fleur had our lunch set out at a long table in the upstairs studio. After an enjoyable chatty break, Miae gave a second demonstration of her decoration techniques. Layering and masking with stencils, tapes and wax to achieve an astonishing variety and intensity of mark and finish. We are all going to agitating for the School to get a laser cutter/printer so we can carry on learning and developing after a really enjoyable day.
