PSAD students, tutors and visitors were invited to cast a vote for the People’s Choice category at the PSAD Student Summer Exhibition 2024!
The winning work is Self-portrait by Martin Hammer. Congratulations Martin!
Martin says:
I’m thrilled that this work won the People’s Choice prize. It arose from a project on the theme of ‘decay, abandon, erode’ that Paul Schofield set to the 1st year Foundation Diploma class. Paul invited us to interpret this idea in relation to a garment. I was flummoxed but on a whim asked my wife to dig out this degraded and discoloured tea towel, which became the support for an ink drawing based on a slightly grotesque self portrait photograph that I’d already made drawings from. The piece works I think because both image and support evoke decay over time, and because of the tensions between the banality and grid structure (a la Chuck Close) of the tea towel and the mournful air and scrubby execution of the features. The piece subsequently acquired ribbon straps so it could be worn as an apron, but I framed it for the show.
